I'm not buying it. If he's doing the last job but still has the note, then I think it was meant as a ploy if he was being beaten. PC shows up, deals 90 percent of his health in 1 blow, bam play up the hurt, and hold out the letter to make them feel guilty and let you go.

We accidentally killed a kid we thought was a necromancer in disguise because we encountered him in an old church covered in giant magical sigils with freshly dug and/or disturbed graves all around it. Then his dad lost it after seeing his son die and we were forced to kill him after his grief worsened a curse he was under (which the son was trying to cure), and as if that wasn't enough, the kid's sister walked in asking if anyone had seen her brother and father. She's still alive, but things aren't going well for her either thanks to us.

The character refuses to be revived. * A letter to an offspring stating that their child might be right to agree with the party's goal, whatever it is, and that he decided to ask the party for advice. * An incomplete letter saying they're so sorry that they argued with (loved one), and that they want to do better for them, as soon as they get- * A letter to the character's brother, the Paladin of the God of BS OP-ness, or equivalent, stating there must be a misunderstanding, so they're going to ask the party what's been going on. * A spot check equivalent revealing that (female) character that was killed was actually pregnant. * A spot check equivalent revealing that the character's child was watching, and curls into a ball screaming if the party approaches.

AD&D 2e explains this. Clerics are different from Priests. Clerics are specifically chosen by their convent to undergo special training to become adventurers. Clerics are meant to be this powerful as they are wanderimf avatars of their faith. Even then, priests still hold a higher autority than your average Cleric due to their relevance and service to the community, as opposed to you literally running around with a bunch of misfits to try and aid them in the name of your faith.
